Expansion joints. In piping systems, expansion joints are used to accommodate various degrees of thermal expansion while keeping the system pressure constant. They are effectively used in cryogenic facilities, fossil and nuclear energy systems, chemical plants, heating and cooling systems, and refineries. Any pipe that connects two sites is vulnerable to a variety of actions that put stress on the pipe. Some of these pressures' causes include: internal or external pressure, weight of the pipe and the components it supports, and external restrictions that cause the pipe sections to flex.
